Double Wide is a country music band that hails from Ogden Utah and includes six accomplished musicians who have played in many other groups before joining forces. Some of the former groups and artists they have played with include Gearhead, The Lofters, Red Shot Pony, the Utah State Symphony, Asa Cruz, Takara, and Journey singer Jeff Soto. They believe that the foundation of great country music is good stories, great musicians and a little twang. www.doublewideband.com

Winner of the 2011 Standard Examiner Top of Utah Battle of the Bands. Mermaid Baby is an Indie/Rock/Surf trio formed in late 2009 in Ogden, Utah. They have played many shows along the Wasatch Front in the past year, and just recorded their first demo: "Whale of a Tale" EP.

We want to thank all those who submitted entries in our Cover Art Contest. We had such a hard time choosing our favorite. In the end, we chose Katie Bills' cover art. Her design does a terrific job of fulfilling the design requirements outlined by our design brief while at the same time reflecting the vision that the director and production staff have for the show. Performer Auditions
Auditions for "The Music Man" will be held on a first-come first-served basis on Saturday, May 7 from 8 AM to Noon at the Syracuse Community Center. Auditioners should come with audition forms in-hand and prepared to sing 16 bars of a Broadway song and learn a brief dance routine.

Orchestra Auditions
Orchestra auditions will also be held on Saturday, May 7 from 8 AM to Noon at the Syracuse Community Center. (There is a chance that these auditions might be held in an adjacent building. A sign will be posted at the Community Center entrance if this is the case.) Each musician should prepare a selection (Solo or Etude) up to 3 minutes in length. Accompaniment not required. Summer Musical 2011: The Music Man!

The Syracuse City Arts Council is pleased to announce work is underway on the 2011 summer musical. “The Music Man” will perform at the Syracuse High Auditorium on August 5, 6, and 8. Currently, the Arts Council is looking for volunteers with a variety of skills and experience to fill production, publicity, fundraising, and administrative roles. Please see the list below for a full list of positions. To join the team, submit a letter of interest to the Arts Council via email to syracuseperformingarts@gmail.com no later than February 19, 2011.

Auditions will be held May 7 with callbacks on May 11 from 6 to 10. The first cast meeting for all cast members will be May 21. Regular rehearsals will begin June 7. There are many opportunities for families and individuals with or without theatrical experience. Children under twelve are welcome in the cast with a parent or guardian in attendance at all times. It’s fun, rewarding, and a great way to give back to our community. Watch the city newsletter, the Islander Newspaper, and this blog for additional information on this production and the Summer Concert Series.

The Biblical saga of Joseph and his coat of many colors comes to vibrant life in this delightful musical parable. Joseph, his father’s favorite son, is a boy blessed with prophetic dreams. When he is sold into slavery by his jealous brothers and taken to Egypt, Joseph endures a series of adventures in which his spirit and humanity are continually challenged. He is purchased by Potiphar where thwarting advances from Potiphar’s wife lands him in jail. When news of Joseph’s gift to interpret dreams reaches the Pharaoh (wryly and riotously depicted as Elvis), Joseph is well on his way to becoming second in command. Eventually his brothers, having suffered greatly, unknowingly find themselves groveling at the feet of the brother they betrayed but no longer recognize. After testing their integrity, Joseph reveals himself leading to a heartfelt reconciliation of the sons of Israel. Set to an engaging cornucopia of musical styles, from country-western and calypso to bubble-gum pop and rock ‘n’ roll, this Old Testament tale emerges both timely and timeless. Tomorrow night's (June 12th) concert has been canceled due to the likelihood of inclement weather. We are looking into rescheduling the Night in Polynesia and will let you know if we are able to work something out. Our next scheduled concert will "2 Steps Back" performing contemporary rock Saturday, June 26 at Jensen Park starting around 8 PM before the fireworks. We'll see you there!

Here is your chance to be in the spotlight. Be a part of the Syracuse Summer Concert series by participating in Open Mic Night on August 21st.

All summer, you have the chance to watch someone else on the stage. Now we would like to hear from our talented friends and neighbors.

We have 20 spots to fill. Each performer will have the chance to do one song, dance, or comedy routine lasting about 5 minutes. You may play an instrumental solo, accompany yourself singing, or sing to a backing track. We welcome duets or small groups. The only requirement is to keep it clean and family friendly.

Kevin Wade Forbush is a Utah singer songwriter who performs a variety of acoustic pop, country and blues style music. Kevin plays acoustic steel string and classical nylon string guitar in flat pick and finger styles to some of the classics as well as original songs he has written. He has performed for several major venues at the 2002 Salt Lake Olympics, Nashville’s famed Bluebird Café and continues to play at local resorts and venues in northern Utah. This performance at the Syracuse Park will feature daughters Kellie Hadley and Kristen Forbush joining Kevin to highlight some original selections and to take you back to a few good tunes from the past.

Please include your name, contact info and choose the HOUR in which you would like to audition. You will receive a confirmation email with your time slot (i.e.: you want to audition between 10 and 11, and your confirmation email indicates your audition time will be the 10:20 slot).

Audition Information:

Saturday, May 1 from 9AM to noon at the Syracuse Community Center (1912 West 1900 South, Syracuse, UT)

Please come prepared to sing 16 bars of an upbeat Broadway song. An accompanist will be provided. No CD accompaniment and no a capella please.
Arrive 10 to 15 minutes before your scheduled audition time in order to fill out an audition form.
Bring a headshot if you have one.
Callbacks will be posted by 5 PM both on the cast blog and at the Community Center.
Be prepared with a complete list of summer scheduling conflicts and availability.

Children's Chorus
Children ages 6 to 12 can audition for the children’s chorus the same day (Saturday, May 1 from 9AM to noon). They will audition in the order of their arrival and do not need an appointment. Children may sing broadway style music or any other song they know well. No pop music please. (i.e. Miley Cyrus, etc.) A parent or guardian will be required to accompany all children at rehearsals.

Vocal Callbacks:

Tuesday, May 4 from 6 to 9 PM at the Syracuse Community Center

Dance Callbacks:

Saturday, May 8 from 1 to 4 PM at the Syracuse Community Center

Please come dressed in comfortable clothes.
The cast list will be posted by 5 PM this day both on the cast blog and at the Community Center.

Rehearsals:

Rehearsals will begin on Saturday mornings in May after the auditions. In June and July, rehearsals will generally be held Tue., Weds., and Thurs. evenings and Saturday mornings.

A complete rehearsal schedule will be posted on the cast blog.

Auditions: Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor® Dreamcoat

Auditions for Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat will be held Saturday, May 1 at the Syracuse City Community Center from 9AM to noon. Singing callbacks will be Tuesday, May 4 in the evening, and dance callbacks will be Saturday, May 8 from 9AM to noon. It will be performed at Syracuse High School and the performance dates are Aug. 5 to 7 with three evening performances and a Saturday matinée.

UPDATES:

Cast auditions are open to ages 13 and older.

A children's chorus will audition the same day.

Help Wanted: Summer Musical Theater Production 2010

Preparations are underway to get the ball rolling for the Syracuse City summer musical! We have narrowed down the list of possible choices to just a few shows and are making inquiries that will allow us to make a final decision, hopefully in the not too far future! At this time we're taking the opportunity to begin to assemble our production team for the show--and we need you...or someone YOU know to help out backstage this year.

We will be taking applications for a director, musical director, and choreographer, as well as set, lighting and sound designers, a stage manager, a box office/financial manager and a costume designer. If you would like to apply for any of these positions, or would like more information as it becomes available, please email Heather Steed at (this is spelled to prevent bots from using this email: arts at syracuseut.com). You may also post a comment below and we will get in touch with you. Also, please forward this information to anyone you know who might be qualified to help fill these critical positions.

Thanks to the entire cast for four great performances this weekend. I thought it was excellent and hope you all feel proud of yourselves for what you accomplished. I know it's not always easy to devote so much time, but it really paid off. You looked fabulous, you sounded fabulous and I only heard positive reactions from the audience members. Pirates Of Penzance Performance Dates

Show dates are Aug. 13-15 at 7 PM with a matinée Saturday the 15th at 2PM. Performances are at the Syracuse High School Theater located in Syracuse High at 2000 W 700 South in Syracuse.

Pirates of Penzance

You can now sign up for an audition time by emailing Shannon Elmer at s.elmer@digis.net. Please be aware that you may request a time, and we will do our best to accomodate your schedule, but we can't guarantee that you will get the time you request. You will receive an email confirming the time of your audition.

Vocal auditions are May 28 from 5 –7 PM and dance auditions are 7:30 – 9 PM at the Syracuse Community Center located at 1912 W 1900 South, Syracuse, UT.

Please come dressed in comfortable clothes for the dance auditions. For the vocal auditions please come prepared to sing 16 bars of an upbeat Broadway song. Bring your own accompaniment. A CD player and piano will be available.
Please bring a list of conflicts/availability for rehearsals and a 3x5 or larger photo of yourself. You will also need to bring an audition form, fully filled out to the auditions.

Callbacks will be held Saturday, May 30 from 10 AM to 12 noon, at the
Syracuse City Community Center and will be material from the show.

There is a mandatory cast meeting June 2 at 6PM at the Community Center. Rehearsals will begin June 6 and will be Thursdays and Fridays from 6 to 9 PM and Saturdays from 8AM to 12 noon. Run-thoughs will begin in August and will be Tuesdays through Saturdays. Complete rehearsal schedules should be available by the date of auditions.

Theater Enthusiasts…we need you! We are looking into doing a large musical theater production this summer and are looking for members of the community willing to donate their time or talents to make it a reality. We will need people to help out backstage and with box office and technical theater responsibilities. The story follows a day in the life of Martha-Stewart-wanna-be, "Auntie Elna" as she demonstrates her recipes (and her temper!) at the county fair. Written with a combination of familiar Broadway tunes and original lyrics, "Auntie Elna" is a funny look at fame and what some people will do to achieve it. Directed by Shannon Elmer.

I wish you all could have been there at Founders Park last Saturday night for the Shaun Barrowes concert. Well, some of you were. We had a great time! Shaun is such a talented performer and we had great feedback from everyone we talked to at the concert. It's too bad the summer concert series is all over with for this year. Be sure and look for us next summer as we will continue to try and get the best talent available for our summer concert series. The Summer concert series concludes this Saturday, August 16 with Shaun Barrowes in concert. Shaun is a talented musician, vocalist, and songwriter who has recently established himself as an international artist. (You may remember seeing him as a contestant on American Idol.) He has received acclaim by the likes of Norah Jones, Celine Dion and many others. This coming Setpember Shaun will be releasing his most ambitious album, Big Bang Theory. Shaun’s new album is a “sophisticated blend of jazz-pop, balladry, and big-band theatrics.” If you like Michael Bublé, then you’ll love Shaun’s fresh vocals!

Every Year Syracuse City sponsors a FREE fireworks show on the last night of Heritage Days. This year, the Arts Council is proud to present Syracuse's very own Blue Fable in concert. Bluff Rd. in Syracuse starting at 8:00 PM.

FREE Summer Concert Series Begins Friday, June 27 @ 7 PM

The Summer Concert Series kicks off this year (as always!) at the Friday Night FREE concert at Founders' Park in Syracuse in conjunction with the Heritage Days festivities on June 27 at 7PM. Heritage Days is a an intimate festival held each year at the quaint Founder’s Park in Syracuse, UT. The festival is a fun-filled event featuring live music, various activities, vendors and even a children’s area.

This year's concert will feature music to get up and dance to by local band, ManageThis. They have played across the United States and Europe and love to help people relax and have fun. They play long sets of music that people know. Audience interaction is an integral part of every ManageThis show.

Songs you might hear at this concert include: Vertigo, Just Like Heaven, Are You Gonna Be My, Girl, Jump Around, Should I Stay or Should I Go, Walk on the Ocean, Play that Funky Music, Message in a Bottle, Rock and Roll All Night, What I Like About You, And She Will Be Loved, Love Shack

So, bring some lawn chairs and a blanket or two, your bug spray, and prepare to dance the evening away under the Syracuse stars.

The Syracuse City Arts Council is responsible for funding many arts-related activities in Syracuse and consists of the following groups:
